Kiva.org allows individuals to make $25 loans to low-income entrepreneurs in the developing world (microfinance). By doing so, individuals like you provide affordable working capital for the poor (money to buy a sewing machine, livestock, etc.), empowering them to earn their way out of poverty.
It's a new, direct and sustainable way to fight global poverty, and the way I see it, I get a higher return on $25 helping someone build a future than the interest my checking account pays.

Help with Clean Energy Bills in Harrisburg
Dear friend in faith,
As you may be aware, an important and urgently needed set of bills is under consideration in Harrisburg. Collectively known as The Energy Independence Strategy, this legislation would move Pennsylvania towards a cleaner energy future. A major benefit of this shift would be a serious reduction in global warming pollution from Pennsylvania. (Our state creates more global warming pollution than 105 developing countries combined. It's high time we act.) It's critical that the clean energy legislation gets enacted by the State Legislature before winter break. Your voice in this process can make the difference we need.
Aware that you have many demands on your time, especially at this time of year, I nevertheless ask for your help. We need to submit letters to the editor in papers large and small across the state to keep the energy issue front and center in Harrisburg. As you likely know, the opinion page is one of the most read pages of the newspaper, and it's certainly one your State Representative and his or her staff pay attention to regularly.
The Pa. Interfaith Climate Change Campaign is working closely with PennFuture on this project. If you can volunteer a few minutes to sign and send a letter to the editor of your local paper, please e-mail Heather Sage of PennFuture at sage@pennfuture.org or 412-258-6681 as soon as possible. She has draft letters ready to go, and can walk you through the submission process. It's surprisingly easy.

Faith Coalition kick-off Event September 25 in Philadelphia!
Equality Advocates Pennsylvania, with Christ Church Philadelphia and the Faith Coalition for Pennsylvania Families, invites you to join leaders of the faith community for an evening of advocacy, discussion, and networking on Tuesday, September 25 from 6:00 – 8:00pm at Christ Church (2nd and Market).
This fall, the Pennsylvania legislature will consider legislation to protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community from discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations. People of faith will play a critical role in successfully passing this important bill. Join other people of faith from across Pennsylvania as the Faith Coalition for Pennsylvania Families kicks-off this advocacy campaign with an opportunity to network with other faith leaders and brainstorm ideas to advocate for social justice in Pennsylvania.
Light hors d’ouvres and wine will be served. Don’t miss this opportunity to discuss the current state of LGBT issues in Pennsylvania and the ways people of faith can advocate for positive change.

2 Mile Walk Against Domestic Violence

Lutheran Settlement House (LSH) Takes a 2 Mile Walk Against Domestic Violence in Chestnut Hill
On Saturday October 13, following a 10:00 am press conference, Lutheran Settlement House, The Chestnut Hill Business Association and the Chestnut Hill Community Association will host their first annual “2 Mile Walk Against Domestic Violence” to raise funds and awareness for Lutheran Settlement House as part of LSH’s annual Purple Ribbon Campaign. The press conference will be held at the Fountain Plaza, located at 8705 Germantown Avenue.
The event will be supported by CBS 3 anchor Larry Mendte, Fox 29 anchor Dawn Stensland and NBC 10 anchor Dawn Timmeney. Participants are encouraged to wear purple to show their support for victims and survivors of domestic violence.
Launched in 2004, LSH’s Purple Ribbon Campaign, is a three-month city-wide initiative to raise awareness about domestic violence. The Purple Ribbon Campaign is one of many LSH efforts to educate the public and draw greater attention to domestic violence in Philadelphia, while raising the necessary funds to continue to provide free-of-charge services such as counseling, legal/ medical advocacy, and education and training to the women and children who are victims of or witnesses to domestic violence.
The walk is free but donations are encouraged. For a donation participants will get a T-Shirt for the walk. To register or to reserve a T-Shirt, please call Suzette Belz at 215-426-8610 x 208, sbelz@lutheransettlement.org or visit http://www.lutheransettlement.org/
Participating business such as O’Doodles, Ten Thousand Villages, and Jahaya’s Organic Skin Care will donate 10% of that day’s sales to Lutheran Settlement House’s Bilingual Domestic Violence Program. In addition Chestnut Hill Village Apartments will waive the Application Fee to anyone signing up for an apartment on that day, and will give Lutheran Settlement House $100.00 for each lease gained on that weekend (October 13th and 14th). The walk is sponsored by Lutheran Settlement House, Chestnut Hill Village Apartments, 3000 B.C. Spa and Chestnut Hill Health Care Foundation.

The Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee has announced a series of hearings that will be held across the Commonwealth “to get citizen input on issues and proposed legislation related to crime, violence and gun policies.”
These hearings provide an excellent forum for advocates to let legislators know that they support sensible gun laws aimed at cracking down on illegal gun trafficking. Among the proposals under consideration by the committee is HB 22, the one-handgun-per-month bill. This legislation would stop the bulk purchase of handguns, put gun traffickers out of business, dry up the supply of illegal handguns, and have no impact on sportsmen and other legal gun owners. Please consider attending the hearing closest to you.
