Mentors Needed at Parkway Peace High School

Dear Members of the Neighborhood Interfaith Movement,
My name is Deepa Vasudevan, and I work at the Parkway Northwest High School for Peace and Social Justice, a public high school in Mt. Airy (located on the New Covenant Campus). I believe that you have worked with our school before through the Peace Program. I wanted to know if you could help me in recruiting for our mentoring program to various faith organizations and faith-based groups. We need new mentors for this school year and hope to gain some public interest as well as potential volunteers for the program. I have attached a small decription below. Thank you!

The Parkway Northwest High School for Peace and Social Justice is a public school in Mt. Airy dedicated to supporting their students both inside and outside the classroom. This year we have many students who are interested in being matched with a mentor in the Philadelphia community. We are currently seeking adults who want to make a positive difference in the life a teenager. A mentor is a special friend, a guide, a role model, and a person who is eager to share his/her experiences. Most importantly, a mentor is expected to be a good friend and a careful listener. The Peace Program will match mentors with a student based on interests, gender, geography, special needs and compatibility of meeting times. Meeting with a student may involve participating in a common interest, such as sports or shopping, or sharing with a student other skills or interests that you may have. Mentoring involves at least a one year commitment, with the hope that the relationship will continue throughout the student’s high school career. The Peace Program at the school will support mentors through providing an orientation and activities you can do with your student. Short-term Volunteer Opportunities

Short-term – now thru January 2008

Safe Corridors – before and/or after school Mon. to Fri.

• Be the schools’ “eyes and ears” to make sure children are safe between school and home
• Make sure children stay on sidewalks, cross at corners, etc.
• Various locations

Teachers’ Assistant - During school hours - can be worked around your schedule

• With upper grade students – math
• Kindergarten and 1st grade predominantly reading

Tutor - During school hours - can be worked around your schedule

• With lower grade students – all subjects
• With upper grade students – math

M.L. King Day of Service – Jan. 13 and Jan. 14, 2008

• This years’ theme: Environmental Justice
• Help with local Interfaith Service on Sunday and projects on Monday.
  

Peace Art Show & Contest – Dec. 3, 2007 to Jan. 15, 2008

• Plan and promote art contest for children grades K-8
• Display entries in Brossman
• Judge contest

Short-term – Feb. 4th thru May 2008
