Thrivent Builds Habitat House

Update on the house renovation at 2542 South 5th Street.

Thrivent/Habitat are offering 3-1/2 hour evening sessions from 5 to 8:30 p.m.on selected dates.

Could you come help on one evening in October?

Here are the dates:

• Tuesday, October 16
• Thursday, October 18
• Tuesday, October 23
  

We still need to have workers for Saturdays, October 6, 13, 20 & 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Please call Stephanie Thaw at the Habitat office at 215-765-6000, extension 22 in the next week to let her know when you will come to serve our neighbors. Or she can be reached via email at stephanie@habitatphiladelphia.org

It is a joy to meet the family who is working alongside us to prepare a safe haven for themselves and their loved ones. If each person recruits another person to volunteer, we can complete this house by October 27.

Interfaith and Year-Round Volunteer Opportunities

Interfaith Advocates - About one-two hours per month

• Making phone calls, writing letters, attending events, or mobilizing people on the following issues: Affordable Housing, Education, Homelessness, Poverty, and Violence

Sustainable Creation - About one-two hours per month

• Train and mobilize on campus and/or Field Ed congregations on issues and initiatives to become better stewards of God’s creation.

Increase the Peace - About one-two hours per month

• Train and mobilize on campus and/or Field Ed congregations on issues and initiatives to stop violence in our homes, communities and world.

New Initiative - Neighborhood Interfaith Movement Youth Basketball League

• Form team here at the sem with neighborhood teens or at your Field Ed site

Interfaith Hospitality Network of Northwest Philadelphia

• Three to four times a year provide emergency back-up for congregations and synagogues hosting guests: may include cooking dinners, socializing with the families, providing childcare during workshops, or staying overnight for supervision.
• Monitor and support the families in accomplishing their goals of being able to afford market rate rents or eventual home ownership.
• “Community Organizers” to model babysitting co-ops, painting and fix up parties, and family oriented recreational events

Interfaith Walk for Peace and Reconciliation – Jan to June, one-two hours per month

• Plan, recruit and participate in one of the largest Interfaith marches in the country.

Urgent Volunteer Opportunities

Germantown Jewish Center Kol Nidre Food Drive - Friday, Sept. 21st 5:15 to 7 pm

Before September 21st: Fill shopping bags with requested foodstuffs:

• Recently purchased cans/containers (family or institutional sizes are great)
  Creamy Peanut Butter and/or Grape Jelly (Plastic Containers!)
  Canned Fruit Cocktail (Pop-top Lid)
  Canned Green Beans and/or Corn
  Cold Cereal (Large boxes)

On Friday, Sept. 21st from 5:15 to 7 pm:

• Accept bags from GJC members arriving for worship and pack into boxes for on-site Philabundance pick-up

Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity – Now to Oct. 13, 8:30 am to 3 pm

Every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday before October 15th from 8:30 am to 3 pm, to finish house for October 31st move-in date

Mt. Airy First Friday Scare-A-Crow Event - Sunday, September 30, 2007 2-5 pm

Help build, with adults and children, scarecrows for display along Germantown Ave.

American Red Cross Blood Drive - October 8th, 12-6, Hagan Gym

The Red Cross is greatly in need of donors at the moment - blood donations are critically low.
